Established in 1881 and known as The Proprietary Association until 1989 and the Nonprescription Drug Manufacturers Association until 1999, CHPA represents U.S. manufacturers and distributors of nonprescription, over-the-counter (OTC) medicines and dietary supplements. CHPA membership consists of “active” and “associate” members. Active members, between 70 and 80 at any given time, are U.S. manufacturers and distributors of OTC medicines and dietary supplement products. Associate members, about 175, are companies that provide products and services to active members. Associate members include testing laboratories, advertising media and manufacturers of bulk chemicals and packaging.
In addition to conferences and seminars and its work in science and technology, legal and legislative affairs and public affairs, CHPA is also responsible for the development and adoption of voluntary industry codes and guidelines. Established by CHPA independent of outside regulation, these guidelines demonstrate the industry’s commitment to promote and protect the public interest.
