Understand Your Prescription Medication

Make sure that you always read the label before taking any medication, even if your doctor has already explained to you how to take the medication. This will help you better understand what the medicine is for and what possible side-effects you might experience. You can reduce the effects of the medication if you take it as instructed. For instance, some prescription medications require that you take them with food to cut down on the nausea. Your pharmacist can also be helpful if you have any questions about how to take your prescription medication, as not all medicine should be taken orally.

Get Rid of Old Prescription Medication

If you have extra prescription medication left over after your doctor tells you that you no longer need to take it, you should get rid of it. You should never use prescription medication that was prescribed to you in the past for a new illness. You should return it to your pharmacist or put it in a designated drop-off box.

Having prescription medication in your home can be a temptation to you and others. You should only keep it if you need it and your doctor knows about it.

Should Over the Counter Contraceptive Pills Become Legal?

The birth rates in developing world including Latin America, Africa and Asia are catastrophically high and this is one of the major reasons for soil erosion, water shortages, environmental degradation and high food prices.

More people in developing world means more mouths to feed, more houses to construct and more infrastructure to build. This means that as population of Africa doubles from 1 billion to 2 billion in next 20-25 years and Asia adds another billion people in its ranks, the threat from overpopulation will remain very high.

Climate change is a global problem and population reduction is the most significant issue at hand in contemporary world. Apart from girl child education and fertility awareness campaigns in the developing world, global organizations such as WHO and UN should consider working with countries to introduce over the counter contraceptive pills so that rural as well as urban women can regulate their own fertility.

Traditional methods such as abstinence, withdrawal before ejaculation, and abortion have not been able to manage fertility decline in the developing and China’s example shows that one child policy implementation over three decades still means a high fertility rate of 1.8 children per woman.

Unlike IUDs and condoms, where medical professionals or male partners have to take the leadership role, modern contraceptive pills with low levels of estrogen and progesterone can be a boon for young, fertile women between 15-45 years of age who can do well with only one child.

Over the counter contraceptive pills can go a long way towards implementing one child policy in Asia, Africa and Latin America which will lead to greater resources and prosperity per capita.

Using Over The Counter Drugs

When using over the counter drugs, it is important that you use them properly. Using them improperly can lead to major health problems. So many people end up in the hospital due to the misuse of over the counter medications. The first thing you need to do before taking any medication is you need to read the label. You will also want to talk to the pharmacist about any questions you may have concerning the medication. The pharmacist is knowledgeable about the chemicals and anything else that may be in the medication, so be sure you ask if you have any questions.

Do not mix any medication with alcohol. Most medications will have a negative effect when mixed with any amount of alcohol. Do not keep using a medication for more than you are instructed by your doctor. This can lead to addiction and overdose.

There are fewer side effects in over the counter drugs than in prescription drugs, but they still occur. Be aware of these side effects.

The Story of Generic Drugs

Content

Disease is big business; perhaps one of the largest businesses there is. Some of the largest companies in the world would go bankrupt in a diseaseless utopia – sadly, these companies “thrive” on some of Pandora’s more obnoxious vermin. How does this work? – simple, this works through the concept of a “patent.”

What happens is, when a great scientist discovers some cure for a disease after lifelong research, he or she sells it to one of these large companies so they can patent it; or if the scientist has business sense along with scientific skills, she patents it herself. A patent is basically an exclusive right to profits from the business end of the discovery. If you have discovered some cure, a patent basically tells the world, this man’s right to profit from his discovery takes precedence over a sick person’s right to be cured. In fact, the sick person does not have a “right” to be cured; getting cured is a privilege that money can buy, or charity acquire for you. You cannot demand to be cured – however, a scientist can demand money for a medical discovery.

Patent is only for a limited number of years, which is a small comfort. After a patent expires, anyone can manufacture that same drug and set as low a price as they want – this is called a generic drug. Poor people in Africa, Asia, South America and elsewhere are cured with generic drugs.

The above is a somewhat crude way of putting this, but this is mostly true. Something as inherently “good” as curing someone’s disease comes with a price, often substantial. That is the price you pay the gods of business and science.

Young People And Their Mental Health

Content

Mental health has always been a case of concern when it comes to the general health and well-being of a person. It is important for people to take care of their mental health as much as they take care of their physical health. At times people do not give enough attention to the mental well-being which in turn becomes detrimental for the general health perspective. It is extremely important to give utmost attention to the mental being of a person especially of the younger lot.

Teenagers and young adults are at such a stage of their life where they break from the narrow confinement of the home atmosphere and witness several things which were unknown to them. They are exposed to the brighter as well as the appalling side of the world. Proper mental development is necessary at such a stage so that the young people do not go ashtray. They will be opened to various elements of the society and the world and have to decide on their own which one to incorporate in their life and which one not to. It becomes important for the parents to give their children an overview of what they are going to witness once they start growing up. They should be able to understand the difference between good and the bad in order to make the right decisions. Young people are vulnerable to the varied situations and tend to fall in the wrong trap at times. Many young people resort to several forms of substance abuse and drug addiction. Some of them fall in the trap due to peer pressure, some due to family matters and some just for the sake of it. The parents should make it a point to behave with their wards like friends and make them understand what are the things that can cause harm to them in the future. It is really important to maintain good mental health in these days and it can be achieved with proper care. The choice is all yours.

Getting Around Tight Over the Counter Drug Regulations

Laws in the United States concerning over the counter drugs have become much stricter. This is done in an effort to insure that people who are less than upright do not take certain over the counter drugs and make illegal drugs out of them. Unfortunately, these new laws pose difficulties for honest people who are just trying to treat themselves. If you are an honest individual who feels like the new laws are imposing on you, here are some things that you can do.

Find Substitutes for the Medications that the Laws Effect

If you have to purchase over the counter drugs to treat certain ailments, then you need to find substitutes for these drugs. You can find these by doing a search online, asking your doctor, or talking with your local pharmacist. You do not need to feel like the laws are going to stop you from receiving effective treatments. There are still ways you can get better, and the substitutes work just as well. You just have to experiment until you find ones that are just right for you. Once you find the substitutes for these over the counter drugs that have been affected by the law, you will not feel the need to purchase those that are.

Treat yourself naturally

Rather than using over the counter drugs, you can completely avoid using them and treat yourself naturally. Natural cures work just as well, sometimes much better than the over the counter drugs. The natural cures are also healthier for your body because you are not putting chemical into it. Natural cures are not tightly regulated, and you can get your hands on many of the things to facilitate these treatments, as many of them are what you cook with on an everyday basis, such as honey, lemon, and ginger, just to name a few.

$4 Prescription Plan

In the last few years, several pharmacies and major retail chains have noticed the importance of offering a lower cost prescription plan. As a result, one came up with the $4 prescription plan and soon others started to follow. There are several benefits and disadvantages to the plan, but for most people living on a budget, these plans are some of the best ones available when it comes to getting the medication they need. One should keep in mind that the medicine varieties available on the $4 plan are limited and most of them are generic drugs. There is nothing wrong with generic brands and they are ultimately the same medication as the ones in your branded package. They all go through the same testing process and if you read the package carefully, they all have the same chemical components. The only reason the cost is kept lower is due to the less amount of funding spent on packaging and advertising. Whenever possible, go for the generic selection in order to save money.

On the other hand not every medication has a generic brand and those which are at a higher cost, are not covered by the low cost plan. But those medications are rarely used and there is little chance of one actually needing them on a regular basis. The low cost plan is now offered by some of the major chain stores including Target and Wal-Mart. They have seen a huge number of customers due to the affordable health plan. Many insurance companies too cover the plan and it is slowly becoming one of the smartest moves made by pharmacies, throughout the country. If you decide to switch your medication from branded to generic, speak to your doctor first for professional advise. For certain items, ask you local pharmacist and they will be able to guide you in the right direction too.

Ignorant Use Of Over The Counter Drugs Can Be Dangerous

All the drugs that are used to treat or cure a disease contain some chemicals in them. None of the drugs that are prescribed are made from herbal products. Since all the drugs are made from chemicals, they can cause a lot of health problems to the people who consume these drugs without control.

There are many drugs that are controlled by prescriptions. This means that unless the physician prescribes these drugs, the medications will not be available to the public from the pharmacy. On the other hand, there are some drugs that are the non prescription drugs or over the counter products. These are the drugs that are commonly used for various problems like fever or cold.

The non prescription or over the counter drugs pose less health risks to the person who is consuming the drug. Though there may be decreased risk, these drugs should not be used for a long time. This is because prolonged use of even non prescription drugs can lead to very severe health problems. This should be kept in mind by the consumer as well as the pharmacist.

Regular and sustained use of the over the counter products can cause toxicity in the body. The liver and the kidneys are the organs that are most commonly damaged. The other parts of the body can also be damaged. The excessive use of medications can lead to kidney failure that will even lead to death of the person. There are times when the person may also suffer from liver damage because the liver is the part of the body that is usually involved in the metabolism. Regular drug consumption will cause the liver to store the toxic chemicals and this can cause the person to even die. To prevent such problems from occurring, it is very important to try and use over the counter products judiciously.

Taking the Generic

If you have ever watched a lot of the commercials for prescription drugs, they will often advise you to continue taking the name brand if it has been working for you.  And at first, this does make a lot of sense.  After all, when something is already doing well for you, why would you go to the trouble of changing it to something which may or may not work?  Then again, keep in mind that these are commercials, and that this is precisely the way that they want you to think about the matter.  And while it makes perfect sense from their perspective for you to never even consider switching to the generic version of the drug, it may make a ton of sense for you to do so.

Consider that the generic most likely costs a whole lot less money for you, and that after your insurance or Medicaire pays for a percentage of it, you may be able to get it for a fraction of the cost of the name brand drug.  While you might be willing to shell out for better health, it might behoove you to at least try a less expensive method of getting and feeling better if you can.  After all, good health is great, but good health plus a little bit more scratch in your pocket is even better.

Of course, there is always the possibility that taking the generic could be less effective than taking the name brand.  While in many cases they are exactly the same drug (just under different names and in differently labeled bottles), in some cases there may be enough differences between the two that the generic will actually not work as well for you as the name brand would.  Not to intentionally feed the marketing effort of a huge drug company, but sometimes their product can be the better one for you.  While that may be irritating, it could also be healthy.
