Buying medication online is becoming much more commonplace. With the rising cost of healthcare and medical insurance, online drugs offer a hefty savings over in store prescription prices.

But all online pharmacies are not the same. If you are considering using viagra, for example, consider this research before you start to buy drugs online.

Quality

Over the counter medicine has a consistency prescription medication often does not match. Over the counter drugs are professionally and colorfully packaged, labeled and safety sealed. Prescription medications often simply come as a pile of pills in a generic container with a computer generated label.

Make sure your online pharmacy works with major drug manufacturers directly and has certified pharmacists filling each prescription.

Price Isn’t Always the Factor

While you want to save money by buying medication online, don’t go by price alone. When choosing a supplier of viagra online, for example, if one site lists a staggeringly low price compared to others, use your common sense. Stick with a professional online pharmacy and pay a little extra for peace of mind.

Get Referrals

Your doctor, family and friends probably have some experience with online pharmacies. See what they have to say. Check with your insurance provider. The company may have a preferred online pharmacy that gives extra discounts to policy holders.

Don’t Let Them Find You

You probably get dozens of emails in your spam folder touting low-priced online medicine for sale. The chances of one of these companies being legitimate is absolute zero. Do the research and find a pharmacy with a solid reputation and the credentials to sell medication online.

There are great deals available when shopping for medication online. Research carefully before you buy.

Using Prescription Medication as Directed

There is plenty of medication that you can buy from the store and use over-the-counter without a prescription when you feel ill. Understand Your Prescription Medication

Make sure that you always read the label before taking any medication, even if your doctor has already explained to you how to take the medication. This will help you better understand what the medicine is for and what possible side-effects you might experience. You can reduce the effects of the medication if you take it as instructed. For instance, some prescription medications require that you take them with food to cut down on the nausea. Your pharmacist can also be helpful if you have any questions about how to take your prescription medication, as not all medicine should be taken orally.

Get Rid of Old Prescription Medication

If you have extra prescription medication left over after your doctor tells you that you no longer need to take it, you should get rid of it. You should never use prescription medication that was prescribed to you in the past for a new illness. You should return it to your pharmacist or put it in a designated drop-off box.

Having prescription medication in your home can be a temptation to you and others. You should only keep it if you need it and your doctor knows about it.

$4 Prescription Plan

In the last few years, several pharmacies and major retail chains have noticed the importance of offering a lower cost prescription plan. As a result, one came up with the $4 prescription plan and soon others started to follow. There are several benefits and disadvantages to the plan, but for most people living on a budget, these plans are some of the best ones available when it comes to getting the medication they need. One should keep in mind that the medicine varieties available on the $4 plan are limited and most of them are generic drugs. There is nothing wrong with generic brands and they are ultimately the same medication as the ones in your branded package. They all go through the same testing process and if you read the package carefully, they all have the same chemical components. The only reason the cost is kept lower is due to the less amount of funding spent on packaging and advertising. Whenever possible, go for the generic selection in order to save money.

On the other hand not every medication has a generic brand and those which are at a higher cost, are not covered by the low cost plan. But those medications are rarely used and there is little chance of one actually needing them on a regular basis. The low cost plan is now offered by some of the major chain stores including Target and Wal-Mart. They have seen a huge number of customers due to the affordable health plan. Many insurance companies too cover the plan and it is slowly becoming one of the smartest moves made by pharmacies, throughout the country. If you decide to switch your medication from branded to generic, speak to your doctor first for professional advise. For certain items, ask you local pharmacist and they will be able to guide you in the right direction too.

Why Pharmacies Change Drug Companies

How many times has this happened to you? You go to your pharmacy to pick up a medication that you take monthly and you’ve been taking monthly for years. You bring it home and open up the bottle and the one thing you know for sure is that it does not look anything like the pills you’ve been taking. You bring it back to the pharmacy and you are told that it is a different company that is supplying the drug now and you are no longer getting the medication that you have been taking, and has been working for years. So you ask yourself, “why are they doing this?”

Well, this is a rather easy question to answer when it comes down to it. The fact is that most of the prescription drugs you buy will probably change in your life time and they do so because they are either no longer being made by the company or the pharmacy found them at a cheaper price.

This works as a chain of events. For instance, a drug company sends out a blood pressure medication and charges a pharmacy 100 dollars a pill. The pharmacy then turns around and sells it to you and your insurance company at 200 dollars a pill. But what happens is that the drug company next time decides they want to start selling it at 150 dollars a pill. So your pharmacy looks around and finds another drug company that is actually dropping the price on the pill to 75 dollars a pill. The pharmacy decides to go with the other company and therefore you and your insurance company save money. This is a big business and so pharmacies have to look out for your best interest and their own. Remember that the next time you pick up your medication.

Why Pharmacies Changing Drug Companies is a Good Thing

When you pick up your medication and you wonder exactly why your pharmacy is using a different company it might trigger a little anger from you. After all, the medicine you were taking was working so why would there be any need to change it? Isn’t this causing you more grief than you need or deserve? Well the fact is that while it might not be a friendly way to do it the drug companies affect the amount you pay and here’s exactly how it works.

If you are taking a drug called Cholest and this drug is lowering your cholesterol. It’s a generic so you are saving money and your insurance is only making you pay 5 dollars because of it. The pill is being sold from the company to the pharmacy at a rate of .10 cents a pill. The pharmacy in turn sells that pill at .30 cents a pill to you. That makes the cost of a thirty day supply (assuming it’s one pill a day) at 9 dollars. So your insurance picks up 4 dollars and leaves you with the five. It’s a pretty simple arrangement. But, what happens when the drug company raises the price.

Let’s say, just to make this easy, that the drug company raises the price of the pill to 1 dollar a pill. That would mean that your pharmacy is going to raise that up to 3 dollars a pill for the final sale price. This will make the cost of your medication 90 dollars. It’s unlikely your insurance will only make you pay 5 dollars. The chances are that now they will make you pay 30 dollars for your medication because they are unhappy with the price. This is why you end up paying what you do for your medication. It’s just simple math.

However, consider alternatives like asking your doctor if they generic brand will do the same thing. See if they medication is working, maybe you can adjust the dosage from two pills a day to one which would make your medication last longer than it normally would. Another more involved alternative would be to shop around to other insurance companies.

Making Your Meds More Effective

A lot of people all over the world are on a regular schedule of pharmacy drugs, but far less that are thinking of ways to use them effectively. There are many out there who could benefit from a change in their therapy or could discontinue medication altogether but don’t take an active interest in it to make it happen. There are many ways you can make sure you are getting the most out of your medication.

1. Make Friends With Your Pharmacist – Your pharmacist knows more about the medication you are taking then your doctor does so they are someone to have a good dialogue with. Make sure you are asking them if they think the medication is the most effective for your condition. They will give you an honest answer and they might end up making a better choice for you. They may also be able to spot possible drug interactions that other drugs cannot spot and, for that, they are beyond their normal value.

2. Inform Your Doctor – When your doctor puts you on a new medication, it’s important to tell the doctor that what you are experiencing or feeling. What might not seem like a big deal to you might be a very big deal to your doctor. Make sure you are talking to your doctor all the time and that the two of you continue to search for the best medication.

3. Do More Than Pop Pills – Sure, being on the medication certainly will help any condition you might have, but that doesn’t mean that it’s the only thing you should be doing. As a matter of fact the most important thing you should do is eat a good diet and exercise as often as you can. If you take care of yourself the medicine won’t matter nearly as much and that’s what you’re striving for.

From Brand to Generic

Just because you get medication from the pharmacy doesn’t mean you fully understand how the world of pharmacies work. As a matter of fact it can be downright baffling to someone who doesn’t have the time or the energy to pay attention or do the research. It’s not like drug companies are going out of their way to make you aware of the ins and outs of their businesses, so it’s important to pick up information whenever you can. One of the areas that seems to baffle most people is when it comes to brand and generics.

You might hear people ask “When is this becoming available in a generic?” But the fact is that most people in the pharmacy don’t know the exact date when that will happen. However, knowing the process in it’s simplest forms will certainly clue you in to just how long to expect to wait until your drug becomes a generic drug. Assisted living pharmacies have a great number to keep track of when it comes to medications; however the residents don’t always understand exactly what their options are, and with no more money coming in, saving a little can mean a lot.

When a drug is first in its developmental stages and the company thinks it has something that is ready to be tested and marketed, they will issue a patent on the formulation and the make up the drug so other companies don’t try and get rich off of their research and development. Of course, getting a patent takes some time. That’s why you will see things that say “patent pending” which means that they can still go ahead with their technology and be covered in case someone tries to steal it but they may not yet have the exclusivity they want until it passes a series of tests. This is a major factor in when a brand drug becomes a generic. As long as the patent is in place or pending, only the company itself can actually make the drug. That’s when all the tests begin.

The Testing Phase

:Original raster version: :Image:Food and Drug...

We are fully aware that drugs are not something that go into effect every day. The drugs you pick up at the pharmacy, even the over the counter medications, have taken years to get to there. So the real question isn’t about when the medications become drugs that you buy but first, how the drug goes from an idea to something that can be sold to patients. Here is the next step in that process.

When a drug has a patent on it, the company will start doing rigorous tests on the drugs. They will test people in the market that they are trying to sell the drugs in. If it’s a blood pressure medication they will look to target those with hypertension and see if they can administer the drug to them in a study and monitor the results. This will mean that they will also be recording side effects of the drug. Now, by law the drug companies have to inform you if anything comes up in the study. If one patient has a panic attack as a result of the drug, even if they are the only one, then it must be listed as a possible side effect. This is to make sure that patients are informed and drug companies protect their investment. Once it has gone through the necessary steps it is sent off for the approval of the FDA. They will consider all the data and make a choice that is right for the people and the drug itself. Many patents end up having to go through further testing before they are approved.

Once a drug ends up making it past the government and their regulations, it’s time for the drug to be shipped to the pharmacies and end up being the drugs you take home with you.

Why Brands Die So Fast

So once a drug goes into development and is approved, it comes to the pharmacy. But then there is something that hangs in the balance: how long is left on the patent? Some drugs are easy and get through the patent and testing phase in time to have a lot of years on the market before the patent expires. However, there are some drugs that end up taking forever to get through the testing and patent phase so once they are on the market they have an expiring patent in just a short amount of time. This is all very common, and when this happens you will see a drug on the market for a couple of years before it is replaced by it’s generic substitute.

But be careful thinking that’s the end of the patent. Sometimes what happens is the patent is expiring and a rival company will begin to start the drug into production and once that happens they are in clear violation of the patent and therefore the drug company can start to extend the patent since there was a violation of the existing patent. This happens far more often than you think and can cause quite a lot of problems for the company and the pharmacy.

Patents and money are the main reasons you see so many combo drugs today. If they can combine them it’s easier to get another patent and be profitable for years to come. The idea of generics are more cost effective for the pharmacy because they can mark them up much better than they can a brand name drug. It’s a benefit to the customer for this reason but it’s not to the drug company, so that’s why you end up seeing so many combo drugs and companies trying to extend patents.
